“No compromises”: Zelensky reported on his conversation with Biden
The United States threatened Russia with “unprecedented sanctions” in the event of an attack on Ukraine and promised assistance to Kyiv in the event of such an attack.
The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, announced this on the talk show "Right to Power" following a telephone conversation between the leaders of the United States and Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Yermak, US President Joe Biden told Vladimir Zelensky that the day before he warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin about his readiness to impose sanctions in the event of an attack on Ukraine.
“President Biden informed, and I think that the Secretary of Defense, who has just returned from the United States, can tell, if he has not told before, about his negotiations with his colleague, the Secretary of Defense of the United States, about the agreements that were reached. And President Biden confirmed that the United States will provide, and this has already begun to happen, all the necessary assistance so that Ukraine has the opportunity to give any rebuff at any time,” Ermak said.
He also stressed that Ukraine will not abandon its course towards NATO membership.
“During this conversation there was no talk of any compromises that do not meet the interests of our state. President Biden said very clearly that any decisions regarding membership in the Alliance depend solely on Ukraine. And only Ukraine and the members of the Alliance should resolve these issues,” said the head of the office.
In addition, he boasted that he calls Washington almost every week and communicates with American officials.
“For example, and this was confirmed by my counter-partner in these negotiations, Mr. Sullivan, we have conversations almost every week either with him or with representatives of the State Department. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defense are also in constant contact. Therefore, I think that we will do everything to ensure that we do not have a frozen conflict or a frozen situation and that we really look confidently into the future,” Ermak summed up.
