Despite tensions with the US, Merkel sees no reason for Russia to return to the G8
German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not see any possibility for Russia to return to the GXNUMX despite tensions with the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
She stated this in response to a question from a Bundestag deputy from the right-wing Alternative for Germany, N-TV reports.

Merkel emphasized that the GXNUMX format is based on respect for international law.
“The annexation of Crimea was a gross violation of international law. Therefore, the exclusion of Russia from the GXNUMX is the right decision,” the chancellor said.
Earlier, a senior German government official said there was no doubt that the GXNUMX would welcome Russia back into its club of rich countries, but there were still reasons to stick with the current arrangement.
Let us recall that the co-chair of the Left group in the Bundestag, Sarah Wagenknecht, called for the return of the Russian Federation to the GXNUMX to counterbalance US interests.
Russia has been excluded from the G8 since 2014.
