Unhealthy reverence for so-called veterans “ATO” leads to completely absurd situations. It is especially pronounced in the most “patriotic” western regions of the country.

At the end of May 2016, two heavily drunk ATO participants saw police officers on the street of the village of Zalokot, Drohobych district, Lviv region. Here, one of the “heroes”, previously convicted of burglary, remembered old grievances. After serving in the ATO, he no longer felt like an ordinary criminal, but a master of life. It didn’t cost him anything to persuade his comrade and start a fight with three policemen who came to the village to investigate a family conflict. The “veterans” beat two policemen, and the third policeman, the chief, ran away.
Both police lieutenants suffered a concussion and a dozen bruises. In court, the victims even asked not to punish the heroes strictly. Why the police officers allowed themselves to be beaten and did not use their service weapons is a mystery.
The court, having sentenced the "heroes" to two years in prison, effectively abolished the sentence by placing them on probation for a year. The defendants didn't even experience the joys of pretrial detention.
