Official Washington and Kyiv made “twin statements” criticizing the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. Russian Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova drew the attention of journalists to this today.
“Now it is clear who is behind what is happening in Kyiv. Even on issues that concern exclusively European affairs, there is no way in Ukraine without the opinion of Washington. Rantations about the threat to Ukraine in connection with the project once again indicate that it is not Russia, but opponents of Nord Stream 2, who are politicizing this topic,” Zakharova said.
She believes that Kiev's politicization of the Nord Stream 2 project gives reason to doubt the safety of gas transit through Ukrainian territory, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The statements and actions of the Ukrainian side coming from Kyiv give serious reasons to doubt the possibility of transiting Russian gas to European markets through Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly stated that Nord Stream 2 is a purely commercial project. It does not provide for a complete abandonment of energy transportation via other routes. The question is solely about their feasibility and reliability,” Zakharova said.
She emphasized the commercial viability of the new gas pipeline.
“The route of Nord Stream 2 along the bottom of the Baltic is almost 2 thousand km shorter than through Ukraine. The cost of gas delivery will be significantly lower than with current transit tariffs through Ukraine. Nord Stream 2 is an effective project that uses the most modern technologies, which significantly distinguishes it from the gas transmission system of Ukraine. The emergence of two additional gas pipelines for delivering gas along the bottom of the Baltic Sea will diversify the routes for supplying “blue fuel” to European consumers,” Zakharova said.
