Merkel and Macron refused to go to the press with Poroshenko
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron did not speak to the press following their meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Aachen.
Poroshenko himself spoke about the results of the meeting only to the Ukrainian media, although earlier his press service announced joint communication with journalists of the three leaders.
“I would like to emphasize that this was the first meeting in a trilateral format after the elections in Germany and Russia. We discussed the continuation of the sanctions regime and expressed concern about the escalation of hostilities by Russia against Ukrainian troops. We insist that the truce announced before Easter by Russian terrorist troops must be respected,” Poroshenko said.
According to him, the roadmap for implementing the Minsk agreements and “using the element of peacekeepers” was also discussed.
“We emphasize that the security component of the Minsk agreements cannot be implemented without a full-fledged peacekeeping mission in the occupied Ukrainian Donbass. The Chancellor of Germany and the President of France supported this position of Ukraine, just as our American partners did,” Poroshenko said.
