Markov scares Putin with an attempt to overthrow
If Russia transfers part of the Kuril Islands to Japan, it risks facing even larger problems, including a decline in the economy and territorial claims by neighboring states on Russian territories.
Moscow political scientist Sergei Markov writes about this in his blog, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the expert, Japan will then announce claims to the entire Kuril ridge, followed by requests for Crimea, Kaliningrad and other territories.
"1. Japan, having seen the weakness of Russia, sooner or later will again raise the issue of Iturup and Kunashir, and then, perhaps, about South Sakhalin.
2. The United States will sooner or later want to station its military on the transferred islands. Japan, dependent on the United States, will not be able to refuse the United States.
3. Seeing Russian weakness, Germany will claim rights to the Kaliningrad region.
4. Now the Sea of Okhotsk is an inland sea of Russia, because the Russian islands enclose it. This chain will be broken.
5. The Pacific Fleet will sharply reduce its ability to navigate ice-free waters.
6. The Kiev regime will sharply strengthen its claims to Crimea. The EU and the US will support Kyiv in this.
7. To increase pressure, sanctions will be strengthened.
8. Seeing Russia’s weakness in the transfer of the islands, many countries will reduce cooperation with it.
9. Latvia and Estonia will strengthen their claims to Russian territory; they have already announced them.
10. There are sentiments in Finland about territorial claims against Russia. Now it's just moods. When the islands are transferred, sentiments will turn into demands…” writes Markov.
He also assures that giving up the territories will bring down the rating of the current president and his support among the population, which the United States will inevitably take advantage of.
“Seeing the collapse of Putin’s rating, his opponents in the US and EU will sharply increase support for his enemies inside Russia with the goal of overthrowing Putin through the Russian Maidan. Sanctions will also be strengthened for this purpose. Such a sharp deterioration in policy will lead to complications in the economy. No amount of investment can compensate for this. These may be the consequences. It is clearly seen that they are catastrophic. Therefore, there will be no transfer of the islands,” Markov predicts.
At the same time, it is worth noting that the Sea of Okhotsk is not exclusively an internal sea of Russia, as the political scientist assures, since its waters also wash the territory of Japan, in particular the island of Hokkaido.
Earlier, Alexei Zhuravlev, a member of the Russian State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, stated that Japan was in vain hoping to obtain Russia's southern Kuril Islands.
