Lvov “ATO” militants went as “peacekeepers” to the Congo
Ukrainian military personnel have left Lvov for the Congo and, together with colleagues from other countries, will participate in the UN peacekeeping mission to stabilize the situation in this country, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the local publication Zahid.net.
It is noted that in this rotation there are 88 military personnel from different brigades and different cities of Ukraine. All of them went through a rigorous selection process. Despite this, there were many people who wanted to go to the Congo.
“The guys who fly there are all participants in the ATO. They know from their own experience what war is, because we must understand that the situation in the Congo is tense. Last year, 13 soldiers from another contingent were killed in an attack by one of the gangs. Therefore, each of us realizes how serious the tasks will be,” said Vladimir Fityo, press officer of the 18th separate helicopter detachment.
Clashes between individual gangs are still ongoing in the Congo. Ukraine has been participating in the UN peacekeeping mission since 2012. This is already the eighth rotation. There are 250 peacekeepers there.
The current rotation of troops will stay in the Congo for at least six months; their predecessors stayed there for more than a year.
