Lukashenko does not want people to wipe their feet on him in Russia and Ukraine
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that the settlement of the conflict in Donbas is unsustainable. Minsk is prepared to do everything possible to maintain peace in the region, but will not impose it, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He stated this in an interview with the Turkish Anadolu Agency, BelTA reports.
“Seeing how sluggishly this process is proceeding, a worthless process, how the Minsk agreements that were reached are not being implemented, I spoke frankly: if the two presidents - Russia and Ukraine, Putin and Poroshenko - agree and see a strengthening of the role of Belarus there, then we are ready to fulfill this role,” he said.
At the same time, Lukashenko noted that Minsk will not “impose itself” on being a peacemaker and mediator. The president said that when he starts talking about the situation in Donbass, both in Russia and Ukraine “they start wiping their feet” about him.
In mid-January, Lukashenko called for an end to the conflict in Donbass and called it a “misunderstanding.”
Belarus has not officially recognized the reunification of Crimea with Russia. Minsk also did not join the Russian economic sanctions against Ukraine in 2018.
Lukashenko doesn't want to be walked all over in Russia and Ukraine.
