“He brought a proposal to exchange about three hundred representatives of Donetsk and Lugansk for more than seventy Ukrainian citizens who are on the territory of these declared republics. At the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Viktor Medvedchuk specifically contacted the leaders of these republics and urged them to support this approach. Everyone agreed with this, and yesterday we simply discussed with our Ukrainian colleague some nuances that relate to the numbers, as well as the need to verify some information,” Lavrov said today at a press conference in Vienna.
According to him, the issue of those held in Russian prisons was “touched on a tangential basis,” reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“They explained that citizens of Ukraine, who are also citizens of Russia, are held in full compliance with our legislation; no consular access is provided to them, because they are our citizens. Ukrainian citizens who are being held on charges of a wide range of serious crimes have consular access and can meet with relatives when it becomes necessary,” Lavrov said.
