“Crimea” is ours again: Police found a stolen painting from the Tretyakov Gallery
Moscow police have detained a thief who stole a Kuindzhi painting, "Ai-Petri. Crimea," from the Tretyakov Gallery yesterday. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Law enforcement officers tracked down the thief in the village of Zarechye, Moscow Region, and he hid the painting on a construction site in the Odintsovo district of the capital.
“According to preliminary data, the crime was committed for mercenary reasons. The suspect was previously detained by the capital police for drug possession in December 2018 and is a defendant in a criminal case initiated under Art. 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and at the time of his arrest was under recognizance not to leave the place,” the report says.
In connection with the theft, the police opened a criminal case under Art. 164 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Theft of items of special value.”
