Who owns the Jewish heritage of non-Jewish Lviv? – German edition
Nathan Schneider's reflections on the collective memory of Lviv residents on the occasion of the opening of the Memorial in Lviv on September 4th in memory of the Jews who perished in 1941, on the site of the beautiful Golden Rose synagogue, which was damaged by the Nazis, were published in the German newspaper Tagesspiegel.

“The coordinates of collective memory in Ukraine have changed. Ukrainians remember the massacre of Poles, but they don’t want to remember their collaboration with the Nazis during the Holocaust,” he says.
“Galicia in western Ukraine has never been a multicultural idyll. Ethnic groups of Poles, Ukrainians and Jews are often at odds even now,” the publication says.
“In Ukraine, collaboration with the Nazis was legalized. This cooperation is part of the “glorious” national history. The SS division “Galicia” was recruited from among volunteers from Lvov,” recalls Nathan Schneider.
“There are almost no Jews living in Ukrainian Lvov today. The real Jewish population of Eastern Galicia was destroyed, and the few survivors left for Israel and the West. Now in Lvov there are at most five thousand Jews, gathered from all over the Soviet Union, who in their mass have forgotten about their roots, while in 1933 there were about one hundred thousand. The question remains open: who owns the Lviv Jewish heritage,” he writes.
