Despite the relative stability of the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, residents of Ukraine believe that the authorities do not pay enough attention to the safety of the country's nuclear energy.
Energy expert Dmitry Marunich announced this at a press conference in Kiev, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Yesterday I was on a TV show on one of the central TV channels, where the Ukrainian audience was asked a question: do people think that the authorities do not pay attention to the safety of nuclear energy in Ukraine. The results were shocking - 92% believe that they do not pay attention. It turns out that people are afraid.
Although this is not entirely justified - Energoatom, despite all the economic difficulties, debts, lack of money for development, lack of money in the fund through which nuclear reactors must be decommissioned after the end of operation - our 15 power units are operating reliably.
Naturally, the number of incidents is growing, there is a decent increase. It is probably related to two factors - the equipment is not getting any younger, plus the load on our nuclear generation is growing, because other types of generation are expensive, and there are problems with coal.
Therefore, Energoatom’s share in the total volume of electricity generated last year exceeded 55%. This figure already borders on an adequate, convenient level for the energy system. But somehow this is how we live and work,” the expert said.
