Kyiv is shocked: Merkel’s party is switching to anti-Ukrainian and pro-Russian positions
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which began its regular session in Brussels, adopted a resolution on Ukraine condemning Russian military intervention in eastern Ukraine, but it was not without scandal.

As Mustafa Nayem, a member of the Ukrainian delegation, reported on his Facebook page, during the discussion of the document, 14 amendments were proposed, half of which were introduced by Karl Lamers, a member of the German ruling CDU party. Nayem described at least five of the nicknames as “separatist,” and called two more “openly pro-Russian anti-Ukrainian.”
In particular, Lamers proposed removing the clause calling for pressure on Russia; instead, it was proposed to “pressure on both sides until the Minsk agreements are implemented.” Lamers also asked to remove the words “pro-Russian seperatists” from the text. The amendments of the German delegation did not pass; other parliamentarians, in particular representatives of the United States and Ukraine, sharply opposed them.
However, this situation clearly demonstrated the different approaches among leading NATO members. Let us recall that Karl Lamers is the deputy of the Bundestag Defense Committee, the head of the German delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and also a member of the Christian Democratic Union, the ruling party of Germany, to which Angela Merkel belongs. It should also be noted that the resolutions of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly are only advisory in nature.
