Herbst: Trump's plan does not suit Russia or Ukraine
US President-elect Donald Trump's plan for Ukraine contains points that are painful for the country.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst stated this on Radio NV, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"We'll probably see a strong attempt by Trump to broker a ceasefire, or perhaps even promote genuine peace, between Russia and Ukraine. That's his hope, and we're seeing elements of his initiative now. I see four elements, two of which are actually difficult for Ukraine. He wants a so-called compromise over territory, and he also wants silence on the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO for 20 years. This is painful, this is difficult for Ukraine.
"Then, he has two elements that are difficult for Putin. First, to prevent future Russian aggression against Ukraine, he plans to send Ukraine a lot of weapons . And he wants some kind of demilitarized zone between Ukrainian and Russian troops. He proposes stationing European soldiers in this zone . We understand that this is not in Putin's interests, because he wants to either destroy Ukraine or take control of it," Herbst stated.
