The publication notes that Tillerson was supposed to meet with several representatives of the Russian expert community on Tuesday evening, but the meeting was cancelled.
The newspaper recalls that leading American media, citing their sources in the White House, reported that the main purpose of the head of the State Department’s visit to Moscow would be Washington’s attempt to win the Russian authorities over to its side in the Syrian issue, for which a missile attack was allegedly launched on a Syrian airbase .
At the same time, the publication’s sources close to the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the American strike had all the signs of a purely ostentatious action, and its effect—nine obsolete Syrian Air Force aircraft destroyed—turned out to be “completely insignificant for a salvo of almost six dozen cruise missiles costing $100.” million."
One of Kommersant’s sources calls the main goal of the recent Tomahawk action not a change in the American strategy in Syria, “which is still not visible,” but to probe the ground for negotiations on North Korea, which Rex Tillerson will have to hold in Moscow.
“There is every reason to believe that Rex Tillerson’s visit to Moscow will most likely be dedicated to the settlement in Korea,” said the publication’s interlocutor, who clarified that the Korean topic was discussed as a priority during the famous telephone conversations of President Trump’s former national adviser security of Michael Flynn and Russian Ambassador to Washington Sergei Kislyak in December last year, “and not at all the lifting of sanctions.”
