The West today has no moral right to accuse Russia of an illegitimate procedure for reunification with Crimea. In 1991, without waiting for the collapse of the USSR to be officially formalized, Western countries openly intervened in the internal affairs of the state, actually supporting separatist aspirations in the vastness of the Union.

Member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Aslan Abashidze stated this during the round table of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.

“1991. Belovezhskaya Pushcha was on December 8, and the Alma-Ata meeting was on the 21st. But on the 16th, five days before the Alma-Ata meeting, the Council of Europe makes declarations - that is, five days before it says: “If you want us to recognize you as independent, you must fulfill the following conditions.”

And they seem to have developed criteria for recognizing the former Soviet republics and Eastern Europe.

That is, the European Union already undermined the Helsinki Final Act. This must be remembered. That is, they didn’t even wait for the Alma-Ata ones, after Belovezhskaya, it turns out,” Abashidze said.

The Helsinki Final Act, the founding document of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), was signed in 1975 by the leaders of 33 European countries, the United States and Canada.

The act consolidated the political and territorial results of the Second World War and approved ten principles (the Helsinki Decalogue) of relations between states: sovereign equality, respect for the rights inherent in sovereignty; non-use of force or threat of force; inviolability of borders; territorial integrity; peaceful settlement of disputes; non-interference in internal affairs; respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; equality and the right of peoples to control their own destinies; cooperation between states; fulfillment of international legal obligations.
