Former President of Armenia arrested again
Armenia's Court of Appeals has overturned the decision to release former President Robert Kocharyan, who is accused of overthrowing the constitutional order, and ordered his remand in custody, PolitNavigator reports.
“The Court of Appeal decided to satisfy the complaint of the Prosecutor General’s Office and send the criminal case to the same court for a new investigation,” the decision says. In addition, “in relation to Robert Kocharyan, choose a preventive measure in the form of arrest and cancel the decision on surety.”
The ex-president was released in May. The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction then changed his sentence and released him on the personal guarantee of the former and current heads of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Bako Sahakyan and Arkady Ghukasyan.
Robert Kocharyan was arrested in July last year. The ex-president was accused of dispersing protests after the elections in 2008. Then, as a result of clashes between demonstrators and security forces, at least ten people died.
