The former head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry scolded Belarusians for insufficient Svidomo
Ukraine is striving for a “bright European future,” while Belarus, being in an alliance with Russia, lags behind the independent level of political culture and “Svidomo.”
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk stated this during the conference "Ukraine – Belarus: From Challenges to Common Breakthroughs" in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If we talk about the differences between our states, then these are different foreign policy goals, this is obvious. Ukraine strives to become a member of a united democratic Europe by joining both the EU and NATO. Belarus does not have such goals - moreover, it is bound by an alliance with the state with which we are at war.
We are also separated by different forms of political government. And this seriously affects the internal political processes of our countries.
Our societies have different political dynamics and, I would say, cultures. Not a single political protest in Belarus has ended in success for democratic forces. Each time the regime suppressed these protests.
If we talk about interparliamentary cooperation, there are also different approaches here. If there is a deputy group for relations with Belarus in the Verkhovna Rada, then, as it turns out, there is no such group in the National Assembly. This is an indicator of the lack of normal inter-parliamentary relations between our parliaments,” Tarasyuk said.
The Ukrainian diplomat also reproachfully noted that while Belarus is the coordination center of the CIS institutions, Ukraine is leaving the commonwealth.
“Yesterday the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine made a gift to our conference, declaring that Ukraine is withdrawing from all CIS institutions,” he noted.
“From the very beginning of the formation of the CIS and during the period of its activity, due to my position, I had to pay quite a lot of attention to this absolutely useless structure. In 1991, when Kravchuk returned from Belovezhskaya Pushcha, a group of diplomats spontaneously formed in the Foreign Ministry, which worked on how to secure Ukraine from the Belovezhskaya Agreement on the CIS. We formulated reservations with which the Verkhovna Rada ratified this agreement. And these reservations protected us for many years from being drawn into the Kremlin’s geopolitical project, which the CIS was and is,” said Boris Tarasyuk.
