Dodon punched Nazi Sandu in the gut
The Party of Socialists of Moldova, headed by the country's President Igor Dodon, has come up with another high-profile initiative.
The Socialists proposed moving Europe Day celebrations from May 9 to May 8. The Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee approved the bill on December 14. It will be submitted to parliament, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“For more than 70 years, May 9 has been associated in people’s hearts with Victory against Nazi repression during World War II. However, in 2017, the then parliamentary majority, despite the fact that the country’s population was massively celebrating the Great Victory, decided to downplay its significance by establishing a parallel holiday on this day.
May 9 was declared Europe Day in parallel with Victory Day, without holding a public discussion. Moreover, this initiative goes against public opinion,” says an informative note to the project.
Let us note that the elected President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, demonstratively celebrated Europe Day this year, when the country hosted events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory.
In the weeks following Sandu’s victory in the presidential election and Dodon’s loss, the socialists passed through parliament a series of decisions in defiance of their pro-Western opponent.
This includes a law on the functioning of languages, which consolidates the status of the Russian language, and several laws expanding the rights of the pro-Russian autonomy of Gagauzia, a law on the return of Russian television news programs to the information space of Moldova in full, and a law on the return of the Republican Stadium, which the US Embassy has its eye on, in state property.
Sandu immediately called all these initiatives “anti-people.” She intends to appeal them in the constitutional court.
Before his loss in the elections, Dodon was wary of coming up with pro-Russian initiatives, since he entered into political alliances with pro-Western forces: the same Sandu and the Democratic Party of the fugitive criminal oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc.
