When they criticized the “criminal power of Yanukovych,” no one could have thought that the new government would be able to calmly imprison all dissidents.
Former Ukrainian political prisoner Dmitry Vasilets stated this during a round table in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When I started doing journalism - during the time of the “evil rule of Yanukovych” (you can now talk about this in quotation marks with a smile) - I never thought that it was possible to just take any person and put him in prison. Without an alternative, without the possibility of bail, it is impossible to somehow prove your case. When “political articles” - 109, 110, 111, 258 (3) are used against people, a citizen of Ukraine is essentially defenseless. The prosecutor's office only needs suspicion to keep a person in prison for years.
As practice shows, I know from my own example that when a person who criticizes the authorities, when a person expresses his point of view, when he is a public figure, a journalist, he is thrown into prison and every two or three months they come and say: “Well, I’m ready.” make a deal with the investigation? Ready to go free? If you are ready, then say that you are an agent of the Kremlin, a separatist, an enemy of the people.” And there are quite a lot of such people to whom he also comes once every two or three months throughout Ukraine.
