US President Donald Trump wants to withdraw from negotiations with Moscow, but will be forced to impose secondary anti-Russian sanctions after Russia fails to respond to his demand to stop hostilities in Ukraine.

Former US National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump John Bolton stated this in an interview with Radio Times, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

"I think he would look very weak [if he doesn't impose sanctions]. That would suit Putin very well, because the Ukrainians would be worried. So I think this is a case where Trump can't get out of it. He can't get away with sanctions on Russia. The question is whether they're going to be meaningful or superficial," Bolton said.

He recalled that neither American sanctions nor the 18 European packages had a noticeable impact on the Russian economy.

"I have long thought that Trump wants to just walk away from the negotiations with Russia and forget about them. He does not believe in the possibility of a ceasefire. It was an illusion to think that he could achieve this quickly. He tried for six months and could not. I think he wants to get out of the game, but does not want to be humiliated," the former Trump adviser believes.
