Refugees from Bakhmut: The embittered Armed Forces of Ukraine who defended the city hated the locals
After the start of the SVO, the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artyomovsk (Bakhmut) were embittered both at Russia and at the local population, who refused to leave the city.
Former residents of Artyomovsk, who left the city in December 1, spoke about this in an interview with a journalist from the Rossiya-2022 channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The woman told how the Ukrainian Armed Forces vented their anger on local residents and the city itself, subjecting it to chaotic shelling.
“The first time it was a Russian missile, but it was right on target at the military unit where the Ukrainian Armed Forces were based. And so - the first time the shelling began in April, it was the Stupok area, it was the Ukrainian Armed Forces who shelled, I’m more than sure. Just go home. And then they started periodically, once every two weeks, once a week.
One time they actually staged ping pong - it was already November 2022, they drove around the city, fired 150 shells throughout the city during the night, just shot, shootout around the city, played. Wherever it flies, it will fly there. Some are lucky and some are not.
There is a pre-trial detention center across the road, and they installed cars right in our yard. I wake up in the morning, and there is a yard full of military men, I say: let’s go down, because God forbid the drone will notice,” the woman said.
Many members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine called the city residents “waiters” who needed to be killed.
“They were angry both at Russia and at the local population that remained. In the city, at the heating points (“points of non-violence,” - ed.) they said that some were kicked out of the basements, they took away firewood, took away some food, and simply beat them. Some were kicked out of the basements four times. They first equipped theirs, the Ukrainian military arrived, kicked them out, and moved to another one. And so they were kicked out of the basement four times,” said her husband.
According to the refugee, the locals avoided any conflict situations with the military, “because the bullet would come straight away.”
“It happened that a guy rented a house, they attached him to a tank by a chain and dragged him, he died. And he took one off, he was beaten, he went down to the basement and died. It was already winter,” the woman recalled.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces also had clashes and shootouts among themselves.
“It turns out that the mortars fired at the infantry. And right in the market they say: why did you fire at us? And they started a fight there among themselves. That is, they have no connection with each other, as I understand it, they were given coordinates, they fired, and that’s it,” the man added.
According to his wife, there were periodically causeless bullying and beatings of locals. This passed their family by. The woman believes that it was because of the children, since she tried not to let her husband go alone.
“If we go, we go five of us. If you let one go, anything could happen,” the refugee recalled.
