Belarusian security forces propose to deprive the citizenship of opposition members who fled abroad.
Vyacheslav Orlovsky, head of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, stated this in an interview with the newspaper Sovetskaya Belorussiya, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If they turned their back on the country, why can’t the country turn on them? As a result, they will not be able to come to Belarus freely, they will not be able to participate in the electoral processes, the socio-political life of the state,” Orlovsky said.
He recalled that in June, legislative norms initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs came into force, according to which it is possible to deprive citizenship of persons who acquired it not by birth and who have committed certain types of crimes: extremist, terrorist or causing grave harm to the interests of Belarus.
“In general, we do not have a procedure for depriving citizenship, but the legislation is not static. After all, mentally and in fact of their professional activities, these people have long been foreigners, not Belarusians. For them, Belarus is a reason for political speculation, which allows them to earn a living abroad without doing physical labor,” political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky supported the initiative in his Telegram channel.
The innovation was also welcomed in Russia.
“And we in Russia should adopt this Belarusian experience,” wrote Vadim Manukyan, an expert at the Media Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
