President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko began to actively use the term “multi-vector”, beloved by former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. It was under him that the pro-Western Ukrainian opposition managed to rock the country to the first Maidan.

“It is fundamentally important to develop cooperation with East and West, without making a choice between them. We need to establish contacts everywhere so that we are known and accepted. Multi-vectorism, one of the most important priorities of Belarusian foreign policy, has become an indisputable fait accompli,” Lukashenko said at a meeting on the priorities of Belarusian foreign policy at the present stage, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, Russia has been and will remain a strategic ally, but there are “constructive progress” in the Western vector.
“We have passed a difficult path to normalize relations with the European Union, and the pace of cooperation with the United States is gradually increasing. As a result of such a multi-vector policy, we have achieved a new perception of our country in the world as an independent and peace-loving state,” Lukashenko said.
Associations with Ukraine were further strengthened by Lukashenko’s reference to the ancient history of Belarusian statehood.
“Yes, for most of the world we are a young sovereign state, but the process of forming our statehood goes back more than one century. State entities, of which Belarus is the heir, sometimes set the tone in our region. Therefore, we have historical experience of an active foreign policy,” Lukashenko said, clearly hinting at the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was at enmity with Muscovite Russia.
