Zelensky decided to divide foreign Ukrainians into two classes
The President of Ukraine introduced to parliament a bill on multiple citizenship for representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora abroad. True, Ukrainians living in Russia are guaranteed to be deprived of this opportunity.
The corresponding initiative, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent , was announced by Zelenskyy yesterday in a speech to parliament.
“An important component of our international policy is support for global Ukrainians. I know how important the issue of multiple citizenship is for Ukrainians living in the USA, Canada and the EU. Today I will submit a corresponding bill for consideration by parliament,” Zelensky said.
It is noteworthy that speaking to representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States, Zelensky said that it is impossible to grant citizenship to all ethnic Ukrainians, since many of them live in “unfriendly countries.”
The head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov sharply criticized Zelensky’s initiative.
“To make dual citizenship for any particular country is not possible. Yes, many Ukrainians live in these countries. Are there fewer of them in Russia, or what? “Does he want to divide Ukrainians into first and second class?” the deputy told Izvestia.
In turn, the head of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, believes that Zelensky is betting on this idea based on the upcoming presidential elections in 2024.
“I think he was suggested this idea, citing the example of Moldova, where Moldovans who live and work in Europe voted for Maia Sandu in the elections. If these people receive a Ukrainian passport and the right to vote, then it is clear that they will support Russia's opponents. But this is a long story, and it is not a fact that it will be implemented,” says Pogrebinsky.
