“Tighten your belts”: Ukrainian officials will raise their salaries to $5 thousand
Kyiv, January 27 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – Against the backdrop of calls to tighten belts and go into austerity mode, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine wants to increase the department’s salaries tenfold at the expense of the State Budget.
The corresponding intention was voiced by the Minister of Economy of Ukraine Aivaras Abromavicius, one of the foreigners who joined the Ukrainian government, in an interview with the Kyiv weekly “Novoe Vremya”.

“We will fire more than 20% of the staff and increase the salaries of the rest,” the minister promises. – Now the average salary in the ministry is 4500 hryvnia. It is clear that it is difficult to hire decent specialists for such a salary, and it will be very difficult to fight corruption in such conditions. I think an average salary of $1.000 would look normal, with a maximum of $5.000. If these amounts cannot be allocated from the budget, we will create a donor fund.”
It is worth noting that if the minister’s initiative comes to life, the maximum salary according to the Ministry of Economy (about 100 thousand hryvnia at the black market rate) will be more than five times higher than the prime minister’s salary, which is now about 18 thousand hryvnia.
As PolitNaivgator previously reported, the final version of the 2015 State Budget law, voted on by members of the Ukrainian parliament, removed the provision on limiting the salaries of members of parliament, approved by the previous convocation, leading to protests outside the Verkhovna Rada.
