The West is not interested in Poroshenko’s testimony
For ex-President Petro Poroshenko, the scandal with published conversations with US Vice President Joseph Biden will not have any special consequences.
This opinion was expressed by political experts interviewed by Izvestia, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The criminal case regarding the leaked “tapes,” says Kiev political scientist Andrei Zolotarev, will not proceed.
“Perhaps they will create a special investigative commission in the Verkhovna Rada. But things won't go any further. They will probably wait until the American elections, and then everything will be forgotten,” the Ukrainian expert predicts.
Bohdan Bezpalko, deputy director of the Center for Ukrainian and Belarusian Studies at Moscow State University, does not see any prospects for criminal prosecution of Poroshenko.
“Zelensky has been in power for a year now; he could have sent his predecessor to jail many times. Obviously, the former president is protected by international immunity. Western partners do not want him to start testifying. Therefore, the current scandal will end in nothing,” says Bezpalko.
As a reminder, audio recordings of Biden and Poroshenko's talks were released in Kyiv , in which the then-Ukrainian president coordinates his appointments in Kyiv with US leadership, while the American vice president openly blackmails his interlocutor.
