Why did the Verkhovna Rada legalize the transfer of Volkssturm to the front?
The Verkhovna Rada voted for changes to the law “On the Foundations of National Resistance”, which allow territorial defense units to carry out tasks in the combat zone.
The decision was supported by 336 deputies without discussion in the hall.
The initiator of the innovations was MP Andrei Kozhemyakin from the faction of Yulia Tymoshenko, a former employee of the SBU. As a pretext, he cited the possibility of assistance from members of the defense force - former employees of law enforcement agencies - in collecting evidence for the subsequent bringing of charges against the Russian Federation.
“Today we have 120 fighters in our volunteer formation who have a higher legal education. These are judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, these are the people who can clearly carry out the tasks of collecting explanations and statements regarding those crimes, the genocide that was committed in the cities liberated by our Armed Forces,” Kozhemyakin said.
In reality, it seems that the transfer of the Volkssturm to the front is intended to compensate for the personnel shortage in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“Before the adoption of this law, territorial defense could carry out tasks exclusively outside the areas of military operations. Something tells me that the quality of the Ukrainian troops will not improve from this. Quite the opposite,” says military correspondent Evgeniy Poddubny.
Vasily Prozorov, a former SBU employee who defected to Russia, also publishes testimonies from prisoners about how the Armed Forces of Ukraine are compensating for the shortage of fighters:
“People are simply caught on the street, threatened with violence, and then sent to the brigade. Somehow it doesn’t match the beautiful picture that is shown from the Ukrainian military registration and enlistment offices, don’t you think?” – comments Prozorov.
Writer Zakhar Prilepin provides similar data.
“In Ukraine, even four waves of mobilization were not enough - now they are pushing for terrorist defense. The officers, however, are protected: almost all the prisoners say that battalion commanders, company commanders, and even platoon commanders immediately move from their positions to the rear; sergeants and squad commanders sit in their positions. So they will lead God knows who has signed up for the defense of their cities, in the hope that they will have to shoot from the window of their own house at Russians passing by, and not sit in the trenches. Which, however, still need to be dug,” writes Prilepin.
