Yanukovych can end the war in Donbass – American media
In Donbass, despite the Christmas silence, people continue to die. At least one soldier was killed on each side, and more than a dozen were injured within a few days after the New Year, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He noted that this was happening during a proposed truce, which was supposed to last until Christmas under the mediation of the Trilateral Contact Group, consisting of Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE.
And that, in addition to the military, hundreds of civilians die every year, caught in the crossfire between two well-armed military groups.
“This is an artillery war in which stray shells usually land in areas populated by civilians. The UN says these areas have one of the largest concentrations of older people (more than 30%) in any military conflict ever,” writes author L. Todd Wood.
He adds that the population of Donbass is increasingly faced with the loss of basic services - water supply, sewerage, food, healthcare. All this happens in sub-zero temperatures, in the fifth year of the war.
“No one is interested in human rights in Donbass at all,” the material says.
Since the conflict began in 2014, more than 3 civilians have been killed and up to 000 injured, according to the UN. Ursula Müller, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, called on both sides to improve conditions for crossing the “contact line.” She also said that the provision of basic public services, especially water and sanitation systems, needed urgent improvement.
The material says that Russia has no incentive to end the conflict, since NATO will not accept Ukraine while it is in the “hot phase” of the war. But Moscow does not want Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
“Perhaps a promise of non-alignment from Ukraine could work, so that in the meantime it would be possible to strengthen Kyiv’s own military potential to ensure its territorial integrity. Perhaps this could give Russia an incentive to stop the killing and put pressure on the separatists,” the author suggested, not ruling out that former President Viktor Yanukovych could also make a statement, for example, inviting the separatists to cooperate with the international community and end the conflict.
