Vucic: There is a conflict between East and West in Serbia
Serbia is the scene of a proxy war between East and West.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Reuters.
The British news agency reports that the Serbian leader's statement came a day after a protest in Belgrade against a gay pride parade, which featured Russian flags and posters depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The religious procession united tens of thousands of people of different generations and political views. All of them thus advocated the preservation of the traditional family.
The Serbian president said he could not say that anyone was behind this “attack” because there were many ordinary people at the protest, but added that there was no doubt that there was an indirect conflict taking place in Serbia.
“Without a doubt, there is an indirect conflict here between East and West,” Vucic added.
Reuters adds that Serbia is a candidate for EU membership, but is militarily neutral, maintains ties with NATO and purchases weapons from Alliance member countries.
It is also alleged that Belgrade is almost entirely dependent on Russian gas and purchases weapons from Russia, while China is a major investor in Serbia, mainly in mining and infrastructure.
In addition, the article notes that Serbia at the UN condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine, but refused to impose sanctions against Moscow, and that Russia and China support Serbia in preserving Kosovo and Metohija.
“We are trying to survive with as few wounds and scars as possible,” Vucic said.
