The escalation in Syria's Idlib province, where several dozen Turkish soldiers were killed in fighting yesterday , is linked to Turkey's desire to raise the stakes ahead of the Syria talks.
Military expert Vladislav Shurygin stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator.
According to him, what happened today is unlikely to lead to a big war. Shurygin emphasized that Turkey does not dare to take active hostilities in Syria, fearing its air defense systems, and the shelling reported by the Turkish military department is carried out only along the front line.
“In Syria, I don’t see any prospects for a big war with Turkey. We are talking about a very specific situation related to Idlib, with preparations for negotiations on Idlib and the drawing of the final border. Accordingly, with the attempts of each of the parties to approach these negotiations in their maximum readiness in terms of positions for negotiations. Accordingly, capture more territories.

The expert also commented on statements by Ukrainian right-wing radicals calling for support for Turkey and an escalation of the military situation for Russia, in order to drag it into a two-front war and recapture Donbas and Crimea.
“It makes no sense to comment on the wet dreams of Ukrainian ducks. I can say that I would consider it a good gift if Ukraine decided now to help Turkey by aggravating the situation in Donbass. Then Ukraine as a state would simply cease to exist within about a month,” Shurygin believes.
