A prominent SBU officer turned out to be the leader of a gang
A high-ranking SBU official in the Odessa region led a criminal group that was engaged in extorting large sums of money.
Thus, investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation, together with the Prosecutor General’s Office and the internal security of the SBU, uncovered the activities of a group of at least four people, led by the deputy of one of the departments of the SBU in the Odessa region.

“According to the investigation, an SBU employee organized and directed the activities of a criminal group, whose members, during May 2020, demanded from a citizen funds in the amount of 250 thousand US dollars for non-disclosure of information about the circumstances of the death of one of the people’s deputies of Ukraine, which could harm him.
In case of refusal to provide funds, the group members threatened the victim to use violence against him and his close relatives. SBI investigators informed the lieutenant colonel of the SBU about suspicion of extortion, causing property damage on an especially large scale, or committed by an organized group (Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the SBI statement says.
