Hungary will return Transcarpathia the same way Russia returned Crimea - “Svidomo” experts
For more than a decade, Russia has successfully turned Hungary into a Western outpost that will help Moscow exert influence over the rest of the EU.
Denis Moskalik, coordinator of the international policy direction at the Doctrine Center for Political Research, stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today Hungary, Budapest, is the most advanced to the West, the most consistent outpost of Moscow’s influence in the EU. This situation has been noticeable since 2010, when corruption created a very favorable background for strengthening Russian influence.
One of the main areas of corruption was energy and energy structural projects. This applies to both gas and nuclear energy. The second direction concerned drawing Hungary into a certain lending system, which is extremely opaque, and subordinated the country’s policy to Moscow.
Even the 2014 elections were largely won due to the fact that before that Hungary took a very large loan from Moscow and agreed to build its own nuclear power industry using Russian resources,” he said.
Denis Moskalik also emphasized that Budapest can, at the instigation of Moscow, regain the Transcarpathian region in the same way as Russia returned Crimea in 2014.
“The next thing is to use some political motives. One of the main points that the Moscow-controlled media are trying to promote is that the annexation of Crimea by Russia creates favorable conditions for the Hungarians, who thus gain a precedent to return the territories lost as a result of the Trianon Peace Treaty. We are talking about Ukrainian Transcarpathia,” added the “Svidomo” expert.
In turn, the director of the Hybrid Threat Analysis Group of the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center, Lyubov Tsibulskaya, told how Moscow legitimizes the return of Crimea in the international arena.
“Russia is trying to legitimize itself in many ways. For example, Russia is now actively introducing European and world businesses into Crimea in order to legitimize itself on the peninsula. We need to pay a lot of attention to this and talk about it a lot,” she worries.
