“This operation dismantled a highly sophisticated Russian cybercriminal organization that was engaged in cyber breaches in the United States and abroad,” said FBI Special Agent Stacy Moy.

The RSOCKS botnet, which the Americans say is allegedly run by Russian cybercriminals, has involved millions of broken devices around the world.

As noted, the operation to combat the hacker network began back in 2017. Then American law enforcement officers established that cybercriminals were able to hack about 325 thousand devices. The agency does not disclose the names of possible defendants in the case, which is being considered in the Southern District of California.

The US Department of Justice said that RSOCKS users paid from $30 to $200 per day to distribute malicious Internet activity through broken devices in order to mask or hide the true source of the traffic.

“Users of this type of proxy service are believed to have carried out large-scale attacks on authentication services and anonymized themselves while accessing broken social media accounts or sending malicious emails like phishing,” the report said.

A number of large public and private organizations have been targeted by RSOCKS, including a university, a hotel, a television studio, and an electronics manufacturer. The US Department of Justice does not name these companies.
