In devastated Ukraine there is a surge in unemployment: 12 people apply for one job
The war and the collapse of the economy sharply aggravated the unemployment problem in Ukraine. Today in the country there are approximately 12 applicants vying for one available job.
Elena Melnik, Deputy Director of the Department for Employment Policy Implementation of the State Employment Center, spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv publication UNN.
“The situation on the labor market is difficult, since we have a decreasing number of vacancies submitted to the service; as of today we have 22 vacancies. For approximately one vacancy we have 000 applicants, for one offer of a free job,” Melnik said.
In such conditions of high competition, everything depends on the existing knowledge, qualifications, competencies of the applicant and the region where he is looking for work.
“The outbreak of a full-scale war forced them to suspend or stop their economic activities, and for some it even forced them to move to safer areas. Accordingly, the number of emerging vacancies becomes smaller. Demand for each vacancy is much greater than supply, but those employers who have relocated to safe regions are now setting up their production facilities and we predict that we will also have an increase in the number of vacancies that will be advertised to employers for staffing. In terms of the number of vacancies, we plan to reach the benchmarks for current work in pre-war times,” the official is confident.
Melnik also reported that today 321 thousand Ukrainians are registered as unemployed. In total, more than 700 citizens have used the service’s services since the beginning of the year.
