In Plovdiv, Russophiles almost came to blows with Westerners over the Alyosha monument
In Bulgaria, Russophiles and socialists stood at the foot of the monument to the Soviet soldier “Alyosha” in order to prevent the Nazis and pro-Western liberals from entering there, demanding the demolition of the monument. The latter acted according to the classics - they caught up with youngsters and members of right-wing radical football groups.
Deputies of the Plovdiv municipal assembly from the pro-Western party “Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria” demand the demolition of the monument by the end of this year.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, representatives of pro-Western liberal and revanchist forces intended to hold an action at the monument to the Soviet soldier in Plovdiv, popularly known as “Alyosha.” The event was agreed upon by the city municipality, while in the city assembly deputies from the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria party demand that the monument be dismantled by the end of this year.
However, when the Russophobes came to the foot of Bunardzhik Hill (“Hill of Liberators”), on which the monument was erected, it turned out that local Russophiles and socialists had gathered at the top of the hill near the pedestal, demanding to leave the monument alone.
“We do not agree with this kind of action, which has obvious Nazi overtones. The monument was erected in memory of the tens of millions who gave their lives in the Second World War, and, among other things, in memory of 30 thousand Bulgarian soldiers,” one of the activists of the Russophile movement “Zavera” Vesela Stancheva commented on the actions of herself and her comrades.
At the same time, one of the organizers of the action of pogromists and vandals who wanted to dismantle “Alyosha”, Svetozar Rayanov, stated that a self-respecting country should have monuments to Bulgarian “national heroes” or Bulgarian symbols in iconic places, and not monuments to “warriors of foreign armies.” .
To prevent a clash between two groups of determined people, the police set up a cordon, which is why the liberals and Nazis never managed to get to the monument.
