Law enforcement officers detained three defendants in connection with the mass riots that took place on the night of May 3-4, criminal proceedings were opened, and no civilian casualties were allowed. This was reported by the press service of the Mariupol Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Donetsk region.
“Employees of the Mariupol police garrison carried out a number of activities aimed at freeing the military who were taken hostage, as well as confiscating weapons from the invaders,” the department said in a statement.
Unknown people managed to capture five military men who were on duty at a checkpoint in the village of Rybatskoye due to the fact that a substance was added to their food that caused drowsiness, said the acting head of the criminal police of the region, Alexey Paniotov.
According to him, on May 3, at about 15:00, several citizens arrived at the checkpoint of military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, allegedly with the aim of providing all possible assistance to the military personnel (they brought food). “After half an hour, about 20 unknown people in three cars drove up to the servicemen and, taking advantage of their helpless state, captured them, and also took away 4 machine guns, a grenade launcher, a machine gun and ammunition. The prisoners were taken to the premises of the Mariupol City Council. They also brought weapons there, which they took from the security forces,” the police said.
“After lengthy negotiations with the police, representatives of the Donetsk People's Republic switched to aggressive actions aimed at destroying property by arson, shots were heard. Also, a group of citizens moved to the city center, where they smashed and set fire to the offices of one of the party organizations and a banking institution,” the department said.
The police managed to detain three citizens who, according to preliminary information, were involved in arson in the city at night and freed the military.
As Navigator reported, tonight, according to social media users, security forces attempted to storm the City Council occupied by rioters.
Earlier, local media reported that on the afternoon of May 3, two military men were taken to the hospital in a state of oblivion. No one could immediately clarify this fact.
