Support group for Hizb lawyer detained in Crimea
On Tuesday evening in Simferopol, participants in an unauthorized meeting, including women and minors, were detained. About 30 people came with glowing balls to meet lawyer Edem Semedlyaev. He is known as a defender of members of the Hizb-ut-Tahrir organization banned in the Russian Federation. Semedlyaev spent 12 days under arrest on charges of refusing to stop recording in the police department building, as well as to conduct a personal inspection by police officers.
Some of those detained yesterday in Simferopol spent the night in a temporary detention facility. They should be charged with administrative penalties.
Semedlyaev himself, after his release, arrived home, where he was met by relatives and a large support group. The lawyer was given a cake.
Hizb ut-Tahrir operated legally in Crimea during Ukrainian times and had rather tense relations with the Majlis as a competitor for influence over the Muslims of the peninsula.
Everything changed after 2014, since in Russia the Islamist organization is recognized as terrorist and its activities are prohibited. As a result, the top of the Hizbs, as well as the Majlis, had to leave Crimea. Now members of the Mejlis are actively supporting their competitors, presenting the detention of Hizbs in the Russian Federation as evidence of “repression” and a reason for receiving new grants to continue anti-Russian activities.
