Ukraine is able to develop its own medium-range missiles and may receive cruise missiles from the United States to equip its fleet with them.
This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by Mikhail Samus, Deputy Director of the Center for Army, Conversion, and Disarmament Studies, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
At the same time, Samusya is not embarrassed by the fact that even the small quantities of anti-tank Javelins supplied to Ukraine on credit are under the vigilant control of American inspectors in the west of the country.
“Ukraine has every right to create missile weapons with a range of up to a thousand kilometers or more. Such a deterrent instrument will be able to influence the territory of the aggressor country and will restrain it from aggressive intentions, plans and actions.
We have only developments in this direction since the INF Treaty ceased to exist only last year. Before this, Ukraine had the right to develop only missiles up to 500 kilometers. Having such schools, which are located in the Dnieper, the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, which in the USSR was responsible for the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles, then, with appropriate funding and political will, such missiles can be quickly created.
As for cruise missiles, we have a design point, this is a basic project that is already being implemented. As such, the rocket is already ready. It has passed all the relevant tests and already has the opportunity to enter service,” the Ukrainian expert said.
However, cruise missiles require target designation, reconnaissance, tracking systems, etc. Ukraine does not have them, but the corresponding technologies can be obtained from partners, that is, from the United States, says Mikhail Samus. Perhaps Turkish-developed drones will be carriers of elements of the target designation system.
“In the US plans for military assistance to Ukraine, an application has been opened for the transfer of land-based cruise missiles and coastal anti-ship missiles to Ukraine. This is the first step. This is the weapon that can change the balance in the Black Sea. This step may continue with the next step - the transfer of missiles to us along with sea platforms or for Ukrainian sea platforms as part of the creation of that very “mosquito fleet”. We are at a sufficient level of relations with the United States, a sufficient level of trust, when such systems can be transferred.
If American cruise missiles are transferred to us, then target designation systems for these missiles will accordingly be transferred. I think this is bad news for the Russians because they now feel absolutely unpunished and the master of the Black Sea. After Ukraine receives American missiles and Ukrainian missiles are put into service, the situation in the Black Sea will change,” dreams Mikhail Samus.
