In Ukraine, the Russian language should have the same rights as Ukrainian, since Russian-speaking residents also created the Ukrainian state in 1991.
Kyiv political scientist Mikhail Chaplyga stated this on air on TV channel 112, the correspondent reports "PolitNavigator".
“This corresponds to the Charter of Regional Languages, it is absolutely logical. The point is that it is not the language that is to blame, but the content that is created in this language. That is, if patriotic content is created in Russian, I am both in favor of this language being heard not only in Donetsk or those regions,” the expert said.
He also noted that expanding the rights of the Russian language meets Ukraine’s international obligations, obviously referring to the Rada’s ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
“We just need to move away from election rhetoric and hate speech. Move away from this and say that Ukraine is a multicultural, multinational country. I would like to remind you that on December 1, 1991, a political nation was created in a referendum by both Russian-speaking and Ukrainian-speaking citizens of Ukraine. This lies in the foundation of our state,” Chaplyga said.
