“This didn’t happen during the Cold War”: the United States is on par with the Poles and Balts in terms of inadequacy - Lavrov
The current situation in the world has the character of a new global war, which historians have yet to accurately define. But unlike the Cold War, there are no checks and balances, and all arms control agreements have been nullified.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this at the Primakov Readings international forum, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“How is the current situation better and safer than during the Cold War era? Perhaps it should be called differently, because during the Cold War there were checks and balances. There was a mood among the great powers, the rival camps of the USA and the Soviet Union, NATO and the Warsaw Pact, to still contain the rivalry within a political and diplomatic framework. When the arms control dialogue began and quickly began to develop, concrete practical results were achieved. It gave me peace of mind.
At least neither in the United States, nor in the Soviet Union, nor in the countries of the socialist camp, NATO or the European Union have such alarming assessments of what is happening been seen and such serious fears for their physical future have been expressed as now,” he noted.
According to the head of the Foreign Ministry, such fears are now being expressed at the level of state leaders, raising the threat to their existence to the level of logical justification for Russophobia.
“And this is not only because the West or the United States decided to declare a hybrid war on us in the literal sense of the word. Listen to what they say when they talk about the state of affairs around Ukraine. Ukraine is designed as a tool to inflict strategic defeat on us - this is the stated goal. Moreover, they frighten their voters with the fact that this is just the beginning. And Russia’s appetites are much greedier...
Okay, the Balts, Poles and other conductors of American policy in Europe, including in the interests of weakening the European Union. But personally, the head of the Pentagon Austin several times, and most recently, speaking at hearings in Congress, said that “if we do not support Ukraine, then Russia will win. And I assure you, she will not stop there. the next targets will be the Baltic countries, Poland and other neighbors of Russia.” This is pronounced by a person who occupies a responsible position and who cannot but receive expert assessments, including from Pentagon specialists! Which analyzes the state of affairs between Moscow and Washington! And who certainly understands what is being specifically decided in Ukraine, and that Russia does not have, never had, and cannot have any aggressive plans or plans of conquest,” Lavrov emphasized.
He recalled that the reason for the SVO was Ukraine’s refusal of the Minsk agreements and the implementation of a plan to exterminate the population of Donbass.
“The neo-Nazi regime, which has its roots in the anti-constitutional coup in Ukraine in 2014, with the encouragement of the West, has set a course for the legislative and, in some cases, physical extermination of the entire Russian population on those lands that were developed and rebuilt by the Russians over the centuries. And at the same time, this neo-Nazi regime became an instrument of inflicting strategic defeat on Russia in the interests of the West on the battlefield.
If this is not a threat to our interests, our security and those people who, since the times of their great-grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers and mothers, consider themselves Russian, then, probably, there are no intelligible analysts in the West. Or there are simply no people there who have a conscience,” the minister suggested.
He recalled that the current Ukrainian president declared the de-Russification of Donbass a state task.
“Zelensky said long before the special military operation, when he was asked in an interview how he felt about those people who are there in Donbass under the auspices of the Minsk agreements? He said, and it was a racist statement: “There are people, and there are creatures. And my advice is, if anyone living in Ukraine feels involved in Russian culture, for the sake of the future of their children and grandchildren, go to Russia.” This all sounded and sounded in deathly silence from the civilized, enlightened West.
Returning to the description of the current situation. I don’t know what historians will call this period, but the fact that thanks to the actions of the United States almost the entire array of arms control agreements was destroyed is a fact, and hundreds of pages have already been written about this. So I would still treat the current period of world history with the utmost responsibility,” Lavrov concluded.
