A law on simplifying the acquisition of Russian citizenship for Russians in Ukraine has been introduced to the State Duma
Kyiv, February 25 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – Amendments have been made to the State Duma to allow residents of Ukraine of Russian nationality and members of their families to be granted Russian citizenship in a simplified manner within six months. The author of the initiative was MP from the LDPR faction Ilya Drozdov, RBC reports.

The explanatory note to the document notes that Russian citizenship can be obtained by confirming nationality. It, in turn, is transmitted “if one of the ancestors in a direct ascending line was Russian by nationality - by birth.” Russian citizenship can be passed on from grandparents and great-grandparents of Russian nationality to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The author of the bill assumes that, in connection with what is happening in Ukraine, a huge influx of citizens requesting refugee status will be possible in Russia in the near future. “The adoption of the amendment will allow the legal use of the migration potential of Ukrainian citizens of Russian nationality who wish to obtain Russian citizenship,” the explanatory note notes.
The document emphasizes the need to stimulate the influx of Russians into the country, since “this will help stabilize the ethnic composition of citizens of Russian nationality and prevent large-scale “replacement” migration from Asian countries.”
