New US President Joe Biden announced the need to restore cooperation with Europe, and therefore Germany needs to begin negotiations with Washington on possible compromises that will help solve the Nord Stream 2 problem.

Michael Harms, General Director of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, said this via video link from Berlin on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“American sanctions are, of course, a serious obstacle for German companies that are involved in this construction, but we have always opposed these sanctions, we have always explained to our American friends that this project is in the interests of all of Europe, and not just Germany.

I think there will be an opportunity with the Biden administration, which advocates restoring cooperation with Europe, to nevertheless reach a compromise in a broader agreement on the transatlantic energy partnership. It seems to me that this is the right path, and we are confident that the project will be completed,” said the German expert.

“It is suggested that you, for example, will sell part of the Nord Stream to the Americans or the Poles, the Swedes, that you will allow the Americans to install certain sensors and valves that will allow you to control the amount of gas that is supplied to you through the Nord Stream. What would a compromise look like? – asked journalist and TV presenter Evgeny Popov.

“The sale of part of Nord Stream does not seem very realistic to me. What seems more realistic to me is the proposal that the German government voiced last year, that the German government will subsidize terminals for the import of American liquefied gas, and what the German government has already done is to guarantee the energy security of Ukraine.

It was the federal government that greatly contributed to the fact that the transit agreement of Ukraine was extended for the next five years. I think a more comprehensive compromise can be reached in this vein,” Harms replied.
