Germany warned Kyiv against attempts to conquer Donbass
Despite the fact that during the last meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, both sides spoke in favor of an early settlement in Donbass, ending the conflict depends primarily on Ukraine.
This opinion is expressed in Izvestia by German political scientist Alexander Rahr.
According to him, solving the Ukrainian problem poses a serious difficulty, since much here does not depend on Russia or Germany, and the ball is still in Kyiv's court.

The expert emphasizes that Ukraine must agree to two things: the gradual introduction of peacekeepers and the provision of the promised autonomy to the region.
“Kyiv has no right to demand that the “blue helmets” occupy the entire region at once and disarm the militias. This is impossible. In addition, a change in the logic of thinking is necessary: Ukraine should not try to conquer Donbass back, but must make efforts to pacify the situation in the region,” notes the political scientist.
He also adds that after the war that has lasted since 2014, no reasonable person can imagine that millions of Donbass residents would simply agree to return to Ukraine.
According to the political scientist, the region needs a gradual recovery, which in any case will be painful.
“Nevertheless, it is extremely important that Angela Merkel understands this, and Russia has once again shown that it is interested in this,” Rahr believes.
