Due to the abandonment of nuclear and coal energy in Germany, the demand for gas will increase, and therefore the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline will necessarily be completed.
The Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy, Klaus Ernst, said this, a PolyTnavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Kommersant.
He emphasized that Germany needs Nord Stream 2, since gas production in Europe - Norway and the Netherlands - will decline.
“Demand for gas, on the other hand, will grow as it is used as a transition technology over the next 20-30 years. We are moving away from nuclear energy and, later, from generating electricity from coal, but we need an amount of energy that cannot yet be provided by renewable sources (RES) alone. Therefore, I think that in the near future the gas pipeline is necessary and will be completed,” says Ernst
“The fact that the project is becoming the subject of political debate cannot be considered apart from the fact that the Americans want to sell their liquefied gas in Europe and limit Russian-European cooperation. However, this did not lead to the end of cooperation with Russia on energy issues. The Nord Stream 2 project leads cooperation in the field of gas and, possibly, in the field of hydrogen into the future,” says the politician.
According to him, stability in relations between Germany and Russia is ensured, among other things, by the economy. He also points out that there are a number of German companies operating in Russia and vice versa.
The head of the committee also believes that political interaction with Russia and agreed with the words of the former chairman of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, Eckhard Cordes, who said that “a strong Europe without cooperation with Russia is impossible.”
“This does not mean that we like everything that Moscow does. But there is also something that irritates Moscow in the behavior of the West. It is necessary, together with Russia and, possibly, with the United States, to come to a dialogue on the revival of international law before new conflicts arise. Regarding anti-Russian sanctions, my position is very clear: we must lift them as quickly as possible. They are not in our interests,” Ernst concluded.
