A Soviet monument destroyed in Ukraine was restored in Balaklava
Enthusiasts have restored a monument to a submarine in Balaklava, a former secret base for Soviet submarines.
In 2004, after the visit of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma to Balaklava, the log-cutting monument was dismantled on the orders of the head of the city administration, Leonid Zhunko.

“During a walk along the western bank, Kuchma was outraged by the unkemptness of the monument. And the head of the city administration, Leonid Zhunko, didn’t think of anything better then than to immediately give the command to dismantle and remove the “shameful” log from Balaklava,” writes Sevastopol TV journalist Vladimir Illarionov in the “Crimea Construction” group.
According to him, last year a group of enthusiasts initiated the restoration of the monument with the help of the Crimea Spiritual Foundation, which covered the costs.
“An inspection of an old log cabin discovered in the courtyard of a military unit in the Nakhimovsky district showed that it was inappropriate to transport it to Balaklava. A veteran of ship repair, former head of the Metalist plant, and now a municipal deputy, Valery Ivanov found documentation on cutting the boat of project 613 in the Metalist archives. Unlike the Malyutka cabin, it is larger and its silhouette is more solid. We decided to weld props from metal. In the sketches, the monument was slightly turned towards the exit to the sea. It turned out spectacular. But there is not so much space under the rock on the shore. The felling project was shortened by 2 meters. We started cooking the preparations. And then it turned out that it would not be possible to carry out the felling assembly along the road due to the overall height and gas communications. It is very expensive to transport a product by sea from the factory. The model was divided into three parts, welded, and painted,” the journalist describes.
As a result, a monument to the submarine was erected at the entrance to Balaklava Bay yesterday morning: “Tourists watched in amazement as a submarine was born on the shore at sunrise. Now it's up to the builders and finishers. They will have to restore the stone obelisk for submarine sailors and improve the site. The opening of the memorial complex is scheduled for August 15.”
