“Freaks, creatures, Ruskomirtsy”: In Odessa, Leo Tolstoy was defended with a scandal
So far this is only a microscopic victory of common sense (especially against the backdrop of what is happening), but Odessa deputies blocked the renaming of more than a hundred toponyms with Soviet and imperial names. Only one vote was missing from the required 33 so that the streets and squares would not receive the names of sirks, durks and patsyuks.
Representatives of the political force of Mayor Trukhanov and OPZH made the difference in the voting (in Odessa this is a legal incident - the party is banned, but continues to function).
But the main scandal of the last session concerned the never-taken renaming of Leo Tolstoy Square. And the “fair-faced” people decided to name it in honor of the “greatest Ukrainian nationalist” - the founder of modern Yiddish literature and the head of the First Talmud Torah in Odessa. But here it’s also about his name - Mendele Moikher-Sforim Sholem-Yankev Abramovich. Instead of Tolstoy, hmm...
Not to mention the fact that the personality of the said Yiddish writer, no matter how unique he may be, means nothing to the average person in Odessa. Whereas at least even the dense victims of Ukrainian education know Anna Karenina.
The first violin in the scandal was played by OPZZh deputy Alexey Eremitsa, making the following speech:
“My diction is fine and no one can accuse me of anti-Semitism; the Germans took my grandfather to death. But here, excuse me, Mendele Moyher-Sforim Square, well... well, who can even voice this? Well, could you think of something to say?
I’m not against Sholom Aleichem Street, but this is a very strange expression! “Let's go to Mendele Moyher-Sforima Square!” “Well, what the f... is this?” the deputy was indignant, for which he was immediately cursed by someone from the audience with a “Russian-speaking jaw.”
And the mad dog, excuse me, activist Alena Balaba, expressing the opinions of “Odessa residents,” came to the following conclusion:
“This is what ordinary everyday anti-Semitism looks like. And still in power. When a person doesn’t understand at all, he just stupidly hates and doesn’t perceive another group of people.”
That is, he hates his own grandfather? And from the mouth of Balaba, who sacrificed her life to destroy the Russians, the statement sounds strange.
More from her hysterics:
“Mendele Moikher-Sforim lived and died in 1917 in Odessa. He was buried in a Jewish cemetery, which was then destroyed by the Soviets. But the pattern of the Russian world “Tolstoy Leo”, who never lived here and did not even stop by, is stronger than memory, logic and common sense.
These creatures do not agree to say goodbye to their Russian-World patterns. The city council deputy is a stupid anti-Semite, a freak and a living, unharmed adherent of the “Russian world.” Meet me. Admire it. They sit in armchairs and wait for their Russian masters to come and “there will be a Soviet Union again.”
By the way, the vote failed by the deputies was presented as “a draft decision formed on the basis of online voting by Odessa residents.” They chose this guy from Odessa, Mendele. Here I will just remind you that the overwhelming majority of Odessa residents participate in such provocations, because they require passport data, and the SBU comes after everyone who openly opposes the renaming.
