Ukrainian expert: Belarus will only increase economic cooperation with Ukraine

Despite statements by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko about the possibility of blocking supplies of Belarusian oil products and electricity to Ukraine, these supplies will continue, and Belarus may begin transporting potash fertilizers through Ukrainian ports.

Political expert Denis Gaevsky announced this at a press conference in Kiev, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“The status quo that we have after the presidential elections in Belarus and the story with Protasevich will remain, that is, political cooperation, political dialogue between Kiev and Minsk has been reduced to almost zero. And given that the TCG meetings take place online, for Kiev, from this point of view, the political dialogue, its freezing, is not critical, nor is the severance of air traffic (unlike ordinary residents of Ukraine who visited Belarus).

But from an economic point of view, cooperation will continue, and Ukraine imports more from Belarus than it exports there. Especially in recent years, we have seen that Ukraine imports a lot of bitumen for the so-called “large construction”. Plus electricity supplies,” he noted.

“I don’t think this will stop, especially since Belarus has always been distinguished by economic pragmatism, and if it is profitable to sell something to Ukraine, then this will continue. And, in general, in Belarus they put the economy ahead of politics.

Plus a well-known point that is now worth considering is that Lithuania has blocked the transit of Belarusian fertilizers through its ports, despite the fact that Belaruskali owns a number of terminals in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda.

Now Belarus will export them either through Russia or through Ukraine. I think that from an economic point of view, on the contrary, economic interaction will be somewhat increased, since Belarus will send part of its potash products for export through the Black Sea ports,” the expert is sure.

Let us note that so far Lukashenko has not been able to agree on the transshipment of potassium through Ukraine due to obstacles from Zelensky’s cabinet.
