Ukrainians begged the communists to give them the Russian Donbass so as “not to be left with only peasants”
This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with heads of municipalities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation – participants of the All-Russian Municipal Forum “Small Homeland – Russia’s Strength,” reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“At one time, I also spoke about this, I personally read archival documents. The leaders of the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Republic, when the Soviet Union was being formed, did not imagine themselves otherwise than as part of the RSFSR, and it seemed that they agreed with the central authorities on this. But Vladimir Ilyich Lenin decided, as he put it, this is a direct speech, to “re-decide”, and transferred it to Ukraine.
When the leaders of this Donetsk-Krivoy Rog republic arrived and said: “How can this be? But we agreed. We cannot imagine ourselves other than as part of Russia,” he said: “We need to change our minds.” Because representatives of the emerging Ukraine came and said, also verbatim: “Why are you leaving us with only men?” Because representatives of agriculture were considered petty-bourgeois elements, and it was difficult to build communism with them,” said the President of the Russian Federation.

“This is so in archival documents, these are recorded conversations. They are in our State Archive. I asked to bring them and read them personally. This is a direct phrase: “We need to change our mind.” They arrived and said: “How can this be? But we agreed". He says: “We need to change our minds.” They changed their minds, and now we are faced with the situation that we are experiencing today,” the Russian leader added.
He noted that at the time of the collapse of the USSR, they thought that the fundamental ties between Ukraine and Russia would be stronger than the opportunistic considerations of the nationalist part of society.
“Moreover, in the Declaration of Independence, I repeat once again, it was written that Ukraine is a neutral state. But no, these nationalist elements turned out to be more aggressive and began to push through their agenda, and everything led to today’s situation,” Putin concluded.
