Ukraine was heading towards Europe, but ended up in the poorest countries of Latin America
Ukraine signed an Association Agreement with the EU on obviously unfavorable terms, thereby imposing serious restrictions on its economy. Now it needs to study the experience of countries that are already dependent on the West.
Viktor Suslov, Minister of Economy of Ukraine in 1997-1998, stated this on the air of the KRT TV channel, the correspondent reports. "PolitNavigator".

“The preparations for the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU and free trade were accompanied by a powerful propaganda campaign, when people were indoctrinated with obviously erroneous ideas. I remember propaganda slogans: “why are you against a salary of 100 euros and a pension of 500 euros?”, “Now let’s sign an agreement and live!”
In addition, Ukraine signed the agreement on obviously unfavorable terms. Strict quotas have been introduced for more than 30 items in the main directions of Ukrainian exports.
Ukraine has opened its markets to European goods, based on the use of European technical regulations and standards. This means that our non-commodity products require certification to be sold in the EU, but theirs does not.
Moreover, we have pledged to introduce European standards for all Ukrainian enterprises, which requires huge expenses. It may turn out that soon we will be forced to stop a number of our enterprises and industries because they do not meet European standards.
What should Ukraine do? We must carefully study the experience of Latin America, where the United States has long dominated - in agriculture, they bought up land, and seized deposits. And we cannot name a single country in Latin America that we would see as highly developed and progressive.
There are many examples of how many presidents were killed in these countries who did not agree to pursue pro-Western policies,” the ex-minister recalled.
